KidzSpace Volunteers at Lighthouse Ministries

Families and volunteers from Gloria Dei's KidzSpace spent a Saturday morning helping the Lighthouse Ministry distribute food to folks in Bacliff with help from the Holy Smokers and contemporary music and tech teams.
Lighthouse Christian Ministries in Bacliff is a wonderful missional organization that helps members in its community. They have an Educational Scholarship Fund, a free Medical Clinic, a daily food distribution (with deliveries from the Houston Food Bank), and they offer parenting support to Moms on Thursdays. They also have a "2nd Saturday event" every month where volunteer groups can host. We made Valentine's in KidzSpace Lift-Off, using John 3:16, and placed them in the grocery bags of food that families got to take home. We served hamburgers and hot dogs to everyone, and we all ate together. The Holy Smokers cooked the food and the children served the food. It was very cool for some moms see their children serve for the very first time.
We learned so much more from this event than we could have ever designed on a drawing board. I know this is what happens when we pray constantly for the Holy Spirit to join us during our planning and our events. So while we wanted to serve a community in need, I think another lesson followed with this particular event.
Children blend. Our children ate with other children in the community. Children from the community, who have never danced in KidzSpace, happily jumped up and danced with us. Everyone jumped in the bounce house together. Children have less boundaries about who to interact with than adults do. Our children taught me that to Love as a Servant, you should blend in as a friend.
