Care & Health
Health Ministries

Health Ministry seeks to promote a healthy "mind, body and spirit" in the congregation and community through education, health events, screening and workshops.  Gloria Dei maintains an active "Parish Nurse" ministry consisting of over 50 registered nurses and medical personnel that share their time and skills in assisting with a number of health events.  There are also many opportunities for non-medical persons to help promote health and wholeness. To learn more about any of these ministries, contact Shirley Arbet, Director of Care and Health Ministries, at sarbet@gdlc.org.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit ... therefore honor God with your body.  1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Blood Pressure Team
Every 4th Sunday blood pressure screenings are offered between Sunday morning services by one of two parish nurse teams.  Members and guests are also able to receive health counseling and pick up brochures on a variety of health topics.  To join this ministry or learn more about the team, contact Gloria at rpetri@comcast.net or Sandy at sdybdahl@comcast.net .

Blood Drives
In partnership with MD Anderson Hospital, Gloria Dei maintains a Blood Donor Club to assist members and friends with the cost of their blood transfusions.  Six times a year, the MD Anderson Mobile Coach is parked on the parking lot from 8:00am - 1:00pm on Sunday to receive donations.  While the blood and it's components go directly to cancer patients, the number of units collected is "credited" to our Donor Club account for future transfer to members in need.  Blood drives for 2008 are scheduled for February 10, April 13, June 22, August 17, October 26, and December 28.  To find out if you qualify to give blood, contact Shirley at sarbet@gdlc.org.

First Place
Originating in Houston, Texas, this international Christian weight loss/Bible study program encourages nine commitments toward a healthier lifestyle and spiritual growth.  Twelve week sessions are offered throughout the year.  For the next scheduled class, contact Sandy at sdybdahl@comcast.net or Shirley at sarbet@gdlc.org.

Transportation Team
When a member is unable to attend church services due to lack of transportation or physical disabilities or needs a ride to a medical appointment and has limited resources, volunteers on the Transportation Team are called on to provide the necessary help.  Each trip is arranged on an individual basis.  If you would like to join this ministry, contact Don at dwy10440@yahoo.com.

Red Cross Disaster Shelter
Gloria Dei is a designated disaster shelter in the event of an area catastrophe such as a plant explosion, apartment fire or other non-hurricane related events.  Working with the Bay Area Red Cross, training classes are offered yearly to those volunteers who would like to serve at Gloria Dei or other shelter sites around the country in the event of a crisis.  To become involved, contact Don at dwy10440@yahoo.com.

Medical Equipment Loan
For those persons who need a wheelchair, cane, scooter, or bath equipment on a short-term basis, the Health Ministry maintains these items and releases them to members and friends on request.  Contact Shirley at sarbet@gdlc.org.
