Serving Beyond

... and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8 not only states that we are to be active in mission work; it tells us how to do it and to whom it is to be done.  This passage calls us as people of faith to be witnesses throughout the world and to begin at home.  Gloria Dei has taken this calling to heart.  We have local mission opportunities like working at a homeless shelter or being a partner for urban missions in the city of Houston, among Muslims or other ethnic groups.  We also are called to mission fields throughout the world.  We focus heavily on Central America and the Caribbean, not only because we live near that region, but also because we can actively and economically recruit volunteer teams to go to the region.  We support mission work throughout the world by sending mission dollars to a number of worthy organizations, but the heart of our work is designed to directly connect people to the mission field.

Central American Lutheran Mission Society
Linking mission-minded congregations, LCMS World Missions, and national churches in Central America to share the love of Christ and bring people into a living relationship with him.

Do you have a heart for proclaiming the Gospel in places where it has not been heard?  Much of Central America is such a place, and Gloria Dei's response has been a significant commitment to the region.  Through the Central American Lutheran Mission Society, CALMS, we seek to:

  • Provide spiritual, emotional, prayer and project support for our missionaries and national pastors.
  • Help train and develop national pastors and church leaders.
  • Help nurture and grow church-planting national churches.
  • Link needy children to loving sponsors through our Sponsor a Child program.
  • Facilitate short-term mission teams.

Find out more about this exciting ministry by e-mailing Rev. Steve Hughey, the Executive Director of CALMS.  If you are interested in learning how you can support or participate in our next trip to Panama fill out the form below for more information.

Bay Area Habitat Home Construction
Our participation in the Habitat for Humanity project provides affordable housing for those in need. The Bay Area Chapter(www.bahfh.org) is a local affiliation of the Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. We work in partnership with those families in need to build houses; the houses are then sold to families at no profit and with no interest charged. Volunteers provide most of the labor and individual and corporate donors provide the funds to build the homes. Volunteers work under the watchful eyes of skilled construction personnel. Work is done on most Saturdays with help on some additional days required. In addition to the need for construction labor, we also need help with publicity, food for workers and fund raising.

This fall BAFH, Thrivent and 10 local Lutheran churches will be joining together to build 2 homes for poor families in Dickinson over a 2 1/2 month period with the homes being ready for the families prior to Christmas.

Gloria Dei Dates and Scope of Work:

September 26:  Soffits/fascia, deck roof, paper roof, sheath sides, hurricane clips & straps & provide lunches for work site

October 3:  Roofing, Partial Blue Board Siding and lunches for the worksite

November 7: Install sills, doors, electrical trim out & provide lunches for the work site
